ALBUM OF THE MONTH
Joe Henderson - Tetragon (2026 Milestone/Jazz Dispensary Vinyl LP)
Of all his recordings, Tetragon stands as a major achievement in the Henderson discography. The virtuoso’s second album on the Milestone label, Henderson continued to develop his sound in the post-bop realm before venturing further into the spiritual jazz that would define his later career. His rhythm sections for the album were made up of five of the most accomplished and adventurous young players of the day: Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette, Kenny Barron, Louis Hayes and Don Friedman. It's essential listening. Long out of print, this much needed reissue has been released on 180g vinyl as part of Jazz Dispensary and Craft Recordings’ Top Shelf series.

What Is a Jazz Standard, and Why Did They Stop?
The most recently written song anyone seriously calls a jazz standard is Joe Zawinul's "Birdland", recorded by Weather Report in 1977. Nearly fifty years with nothing new entering the canon. What happened, and does it matter?

ESP-Disk': The Label That Recorded What Nobody Else Would
Between 1964 and 1974, a New York lawyer named Bernard Stollman ran a record label out of Manhattan apartments with a family inheritance and a policy of total artistic freedom. The catalogue he built, from Albert Ayler's Spiritual Unity to Sun Ra's Heliocentric Worlds to The Fugs' proto-punk debut, is one of the most important in recorded music. This is the full story of ESP-Disk', and a guide to collecting it on vinyl.
