Eric Dolphy had left Los Angeles and Chico Hamilton's group to settle in New York at the start of 1960. Within weeks he was playing with Charles Mingus. Esmond Edwards signed him to the Prestige/New Jazz label for this debut, booked Van Gelder's Englewood Cliffs studio and assembled a quintet of players who could keep up. Freddie Hubbard was twenty, about to start his run of Blue Note leader dates. Jaki Byard had recently moved from Boston and was working with Mingus. George Tucker held the bass chair. Roy Haynes played drums.

"G.W." opens on alto saxophone, Dolphy and Hubbard playing a hard bop head before the solos move into territory that sits just outside the genre's conventions. Dolphy switches to bass clarinet for "Green Dolphin Street", one of the first recordings to give the bass clarinet a genuine solo feature rather than using it for colour or doubling. "Les" returns to alto. "245" is a blues, Hubbard soloing with the command that would define his early Blue Note years. "Glad to Be Unhappy" is the Rodgers and Hart ballad from On Your Toes (1936), Dolphy alone on flute with the rhythm section, Hubbard sitting out. "Miss Toni" closes on bass clarinet.

The session took place on April 1, 1960. A seventh piece titled "April Fool" was recorded that day but left off the original LP. It appeared on later CD reissues.
