Eric Dolphy (1928–1964), multi-reed virtuoso (alto sax, bass clarinet, flute), expanded jazz language with wide-interval lines, striking timbres and lyrical freedom. A vital voice with Charles Mingus, John Coltrane and Oliver Nelson, he led landmark sessions including Out to Lunch!, Outward Bound, Out There and the Live at the Five Spot dates with Booker Little. Lasting avant-garde/post-bop influence.
