About this pressing

Yussef Dayes - Black Classical Music | 2 x Vinyl LP - Brownswood Recordings (BWOOD0310LP, gatefold, black vinyl)

Black Classical Music is the record that confirmed Yussef Dayes as one of the most important drummers of his generation. Dayes had already made his name in the London scene, first with the broken, hypnotic grooves of Yussef Kamaal and then in his duo album with Tom Misch, but this 2023 debut under his own name is his fullest statement, a sprawling double album that gathers jazz, Afrobeat, hip hop, soul and orchestral music under a single, pointed title. The playing is built around his drumming, loose and enormous and endlessly inventive, with the young bassist Rocco Palladino locked in alongside him on most of the record. Around that core Dayes assembles a huge cast: Shabaka Hutchings on bass clarinet, Tom Misch on guitar, the reggae star Chronixx, the American vocalist Masego, and, on two tracks, the Chineke! Orchestra, Europe's first majority-Black orchestra, whose presence makes the album's argument explicit. Across nineteen tracks the music moves from the hard-swinging to the meditative to the celebratory, and it never feels like a drummer's showcase so much as a bandleader's vision.

The title is a statement of intent. By calling this music black classical music, Dayes places jazz and the Black diasporic tradition on the same footing as the European canon, an idea that has been argued for decades and that his generation of London musicians has done much to advance. The album was widely acclaimed and a commercial success, and it helped carry the scene to a still wider audience. This copy is the standard black vinyl edition, a gatefold double LP on Brownswood Recordings, Gilles Peterson's label, distributed through Nonesuch, pressed in Germany and mastered by Alex Wharton at Abbey Road.
