Wes Montgomery - A Day In The Life Vinyl LP - 1976 Japanese A&M-CTI Jazz Series Limited Edition
Wes Montgomery's 1967 crossover album pairs the guitarist's warm, octave-playing style with Don Sebesky's lush orchestral arrangements, creating accessible yet sophisticated instrumental pop-jazz. Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs and produced by Creed Taylor, the album features contemporary pop hits including two Beatles compositions ("A Day In The Life", "Eleanor Rigby"), Percy Sledge's "When A Man Loves A Woman", and The Association's "Windy" alongside jazz standards. Supported by Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, Grady Tate on drums, Ray Barretto on percussion, and Sebesky's full orchestra including strings, woodwinds, French horn, and harp, Montgomery's guitar remains the focal point despite the elaborate production. Released in Japan in 1976 as part of the A&M-CTI Jazz Series and distributed by King Record Co. Ltd., this limited edition captures Montgomery's final period before his untimely death in 1968.
Montgomery's approach to these contemporary pop songs demonstrates his gift for melody and his ability to make any material swing through his distinctive thumb-picking technique and use of octaves. While some jazz purists criticised these late-period commercial recordings, the albums achieved popular success and introduced Montgomery's artistry to broader audiences. Sebesky's arrangements, while lush, provide space for Montgomery's guitar to sing, the orchestration enhancing rather than overwhelming his distinctive voice. Hancock's piano work adds harmonic sophistication, while the rhythm section of Carter and Tate maintains jazz credentials beneath the pop-oriented production.
Engineered by Rudy Van Gelder and produced by Creed Taylor (presaging his later CTI label's aesthetic), the album captures Montgomery's warm tone with clarity while balancing the orchestral elements. The material ranges from the psychedelic-era Beatles through soul ballads to jazz standards like "Willow Weep For Me", each receiving treatment that honours the melody while showcasing Montgomery's improvisational gifts. Distributed by King Record Co. Ltd. as part of the A&M-CTI Jazz Series, this Japanese limited edition offers Montgomery's commercial peak in quality pressing.
