About this pressing

Originally released on the small Chicago label GIG Records in the late 1950s and reissued in 1985 by Fresh Sound Records (Spain), Subtle Sounds is an overlooked gem from bassist, arranger, and bandleader Johnnie Pate. Best known later for his work with the Impressions and in orchestral soul-jazz, Pate here leads a tight, elegant trio featuring Ronnell Bright on piano and Charles Walton on drums, with occasional vocals from Gwen Stevens.

The mood throughout is light, lyrical, and beautifully balanced — a portrait of late-’50s jazz at its most intimate. Bright’s piano lines are crisp and inventive, Walton’s drumming quietly propulsive, and Pate’s bass work both melodic and grounding. From graceful readings of Will You Still Be Mine and I’ve Got a Crush on You to the relaxed swing of Mood for Milt and Thou Swell, the album lives up to its title — music that’s understated yet full of charm.

The 1985 Spanish mono pressing (FSR-744) offers warm, detailed sound and faithfully reproduces the original GIG artwork. For collectors of small-group bop and rare American jazz, Subtle Sounds remains a quietly dazzling rediscovery.
