Johnnie Pate

Johnnie Pate (also credited as Johnny Pate)—Chicago-born bassist turned arranger/producer—bridged jazz and soul. In the ’50s he led the Johnnie Pate Trio with Ronnell Bright and Charles Walton (with vocalist Gwen Stevens), then became a key arranger for Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions. He also scored films, notably Shaft in Africa (1973).
