About this pressing
A collaboration between three of London's most forward-thinking musicians, The Comet Is Coming brings together saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings (Sons of Kemet, Shabaka and the Ancestors), keyboardist Dan Leavers (known as Danalogue), and drummer Maxwell Hallett (known as Betamax) to create a cosmic blend of jazz, electronic music, and psychedelic intensity. This Record Store Day 2020 12-inch single, released on Impulse! and pressed by GZ Media, presents "Imminent" on the A-side with a Noss DJ remix of "Super Zodiac" on the flip.
"Imminent" captures The Comet Is Coming's distinctive sound: Hutchings' urgent, sometimes screaming saxophone over Danalogue's swirling synthesizers and Betamax's propulsive drumming. The track title suggests something approaching, building tension and anticipation, the music's intensity evoking both cosmic spectacle and earthly urgency. Recorded at London's legendary Total Refreshment Centre, a crucial hub for the UK jazz explosion of the 2010s, the track captures the energy and experimentalism of that scene.
The B-side presents Noss DJ's remix of "Super Zodiac", transforming The Comet Is Coming's cosmic jazz into dancefloor-oriented electronic music. Noss DJ, known for experimental electronic productions, deconstructs the original track and rebuilds it with club sensibilities while maintaining the source material's otherworldly character. This remix demonstrates the permeability of boundaries between jazz, electronic music, and club culture that defines much contemporary experimental music.
The Comet Is Coming's music draws as much from Afrofuturism, Sun Ra's cosmic philosophy, and electronic music as from conventional jazz. Hutchings, the most recognisable member through his work in multiple acclaimed groups, brings spiritual intensity and technical mastery. Danalogue's synthesizers create dense, psychedelic textures that function as both harmonic foundation and sonic assault. Betamax's drumming combines jazz technique with electronic music's rhythmic insistence, bridging acoustic and electronic approaches.
Mixed and produced by Betamax and Danalogue, mastered by Daddy Kev (known for his work with Flying Lotus and the Brainfeeder roster), and lacquer cut by Ian Sefchick, this 12-inch represents professional production befitting the group's vision. The Impulse! label release connects The Comet Is Coming to that legendary label's spiritual jazz legacy while acknowledging their electronic and experimental elements.
As a Record Store Day 2020 release, this 12-inch had limited pressing and was available only through participating independent record shops on the designated day (though RSD 2020 was postponed and spread across multiple dates due to COVID-19 pandemic). This limited availability and event-specific release creates inherent scarcity and collector interest.
