Stanley Turrentine With Milt Jackson - Cherry Vinyl LP - 1978 Japanese CTI Original 1500 Series Limited Edition

The pairing of tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine with vibraphonist Milt Jackson resulted in one of CTI's most satisfying jazz-funk sessions. Recorded in May 1972 at Van Gelder Studios with producer Creed Taylor's signature all-star rhythm section (Ron Carter on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, Cornell Dupree on guitar, and Bob James on piano and electric piano), Cherry balances groove-oriented material like "Speedball" and "Sister Sanctified" with more contemplative ballad work on "I Remember You" and the title track. This 1978 Japanese limited edition, part of CTI's Original 1500 Series and manufactured by King Record Co. Ltd., offers this essential CTI session in premium Japanese pressing quality.

Turrentine's warm, blues-drenched tenor sound finds perfect complement in Jackson's shimmering vibraphone, their frontline creating sophisticated yet accessible melodies over the rhythm section's tight grooves. Bob James' electric piano and acoustic piano work bridges the soul-jazz and sophisticated hard bop elements, while Cornell Dupree's guitar adds funk credentials and Ron Carter's bass provides both melodic invention and rhythmic foundation. Billy Cobham's drumming, just before his fusion stardom, demonstrates the power and precision that made him CTI's go-to drummer for jazz-funk sessions.

Engineered by Rudy Van Gelder and produced by Creed Taylor, Cherry exemplifies CTI's aesthetic at its peak: sophisticated musicianship meeting contemporary grooves, audiophile recording quality serving accessible material, and all-star personnel collaborating at the highest level.
