Stanley Turrentine

Stanley Turrentine

Stanley Turrentine (1934–2000), blues-drenched tenor saxophonist, straddled hard bop and soul jazz with a big, honeyed tone. On Blue Note he shone on Blue Hour (with The Three Sounds), Up at Minton’s and That’s Where It’s At, often alongside organist Shirley Scott. In the ’70s his CTI hits—Sugar, Don’t Mess with Mr. T.—brought crossover fame.
