Recorded in December 1955 and originally released on Prestige in 1956, Worktime captures Sonny Rollins at just 25 years old, already in full command of his tenor saxophone voice. Backed by an exceptional rhythm section — Ray Bryant (piano), George Morrow (bass), and Max Roach (drums) — Rollins delivers a set that’s both fiery and sophisticated.

From the swinging opener There’s No Business Like Show Business to the lyrical ballad It’s All Right With Me and the driving Paradox, the album shows Rollins’s range as both a melodic interpreter and a daring improviser. Roach’s dynamic drumming keeps the energy high throughout, making this session a gem of his early catalogue.

Fresh, inventive, and brimming with youthful energy, Worktime stands as one of Rollins’s most exciting early statements.
