Sonny Rollins (born 1930), tenor sax titan, famed for thematic improvisation, titanic tone and marathon solos. Essential albums: Saxophone Colossus (“St. Thomas”), Tenor Madness (with Coltrane), A Night at the Village Vanguard, Way Out West, Freedom Suite. After his Williamsburg Bridge sabbatical, he returned with The Bridge and later landmarks like East Broadway Run Down.
