Miles Davis - Bags' Groove Vinyl LP - 1976 Japanese Prestige Jazztime Now!! Series Mono Reissue

Two historic sessions unite Miles Davis with legendary collaborators in different configurations. Side A presents the legendary December 1954 date featuring Thelonious Monk on piano and Milt Jackson on vibraphone, with two takes of the title track revealing the creative process behind this hard bop classic. Side B captures Davis with a different quintet from June 1954 including Sonny Rollins on tenor saxophone and Horace Silver on piano, performing four Rollins originals plus two takes of "But Not For Me". Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder and released in Japan in 1976 as part of Prestige's Jazztime Now!! series, this mono pressing manufactured by Victor Musical Industries includes an LP-sized printed insert.

The December session featuring Monk is particularly notable for the documented tension between the pianist and Davis, yet the music transcends any personal friction. Monk's angular, dissonant comping on the two takes of "Bags' Groove" provides harmonic edge beneath Davis' lyrical trumpet and Jackson's bluesy vibraphone. The June session showcases a different dynamic, Rollins' muscular tenor and Silver's funky piano creating the hard bop aesthetic that would dominate 1950s jazz. Davis' trumpet on compositions like "Airegin", "Oleo", and "Doxy" demonstrates the melodic invention and cool tone that made him modern jazz's most influential voice.
