About this pressing
Issued in 1984 by Blue Note Japan (BNJ-61003) as part of The Other Side of Blue Note 1500 Series, this mono reissue of Round About Midnight at the Café Bohemia, Vol. 2 captures trumpeter Kenny Dorham live with his quintet at the legendary Greenwich Village club in 1956. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, the session distills the vibrant energy of New York’s hard bop scene in full flight.
The lineup is stellar: J.R. Monterose on tenor saxophone, Bobby Timmons on piano, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Sam Jones on bass, and Arthur Edgehill on drums. Together they create a sound that’s taut yet relaxed — full of lyricism, groove, and swing.
Highlights include Dorham’s bluesy K.D.’s Blues, the elegant Who Cares, and an alternate take of Mexico City, showcasing his burnished tone and melodic inventiveness. Royal Roost and The Prophet stretch out with easy authority, while My Heart Stood Still offers a moment of introspective calm amid the set’s driving momentum.
This 1984 Japanese pressing exemplifies Blue Note Japan’s meticulous approach — beautifully mastered, pressed on high-grade vinyl, and presented in a faithful reproduction of the original artwork. A classic hard bop live date, captured with warmth, immediacy, and poise.
