Keith Jarrett - Treasure Island | Vinyl LP - 1974 Original US ABC Impulse! Gatefold (AS-9274, Kendun/Terre Haute)

  • Keith Jarrett's American Quartet — Dewey Redman on tenor saxophone, Charlie Haden on bass, Paul Motian on drums — recorded at Generation Sound Studio, New York City, on 27 and 28 February 1974; the quartet's first studio album for Impulse!, produced by Ed Michel
  • Seven originals across two sides, from the slow country-gospel of "The Rich (And The Poor)" to the Latin-tinged title track and Jarrett's soprano saxophone outing on "Angles (Without Edges)"; two tracks feature guitarist Sam Brown
  • Original 1974 US pressing, gatefold; lacquer cut at Kendun Recorders, pressed at Columbia Records Pressing Plant, Terre Haute; Compatible Stereo/Quadraphonic format

Keith Jarrett had been working with Charlie Haden and Paul Motian since the late 1960s; Dewey Redman joined them around 1971 when Jarrett signed with Impulse! after Columbia dropped him. The four musicians became known as the American Quartet and recorded four studio albums for the label between 1974 and 1976. Treasure Island, recorded at Generation Sound Studio in New York City over two days in late February 1974, was the first of the studio recordings. Producer Ed Michel had been a key figure at Impulse! through the label's Coltrane years and oversaw much of the quartet's output. Engineer Tony May mixed the sessions at The Village Recorder in Los Angeles.

The seven tracks on Treasure Island move between idioms without forcing cohesion. "The Rich (And The Poor)" is a slow gospel piece, Motian playing without cymbals, Haden loud in the mix, Jarrett's piano building over a bass drum and snare pulse. The title track brings in guitarist Sam Brown and introduces a more airy, Latin-tinged texture. Jarrett plays soprano saxophone on "Angles (Without Edges)." "Introduction/Yaqui Indian Folk Song" incorporates a melody from the Yaqui people of the Sonoran Desert. Brown also appears on the closing "Sister Fortune." Jarrett plays additional instruments across the session — osi drum, wood flute — that extend the record's rhythmic and textural range beyond the standard piano quartet. Two months after these sessions, Jarrett would enter a studio in Norway to record Belonging with Jan Garbarek, Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen. This original US pressing is gatefold, lacquer cut at Kendun Recorders and pressed at Columbia's Terre Haute plant, in Compatible Stereo/Quadraphonic format.
