Keith Jarrett arrived at the Cologne Opera House on the night of 24 January 1975 in no shape to make history. He had driven overnight from Switzerland in Manfred Eicher's small car, barely slept, and was in enough back pain to be wearing a brace. Then he saw the piano. He had asked for a Bösendorfer Imperial concert grand. What the staff had wheeled out by mistake was a small Bösendorfer rehearsal instrument, out of tune, thin up top, weak in the bass, with keys and pedals that stuck. He nearly refused to play. The teenage promoter Vera Brandes talked him into it, and close to midnight, in front of a sold-out house, he sat down and improvised. Everything you hear was invented on the spot. Jarrett worked around the piano's faults, keeping to the register that still rang true and rolling long left-hand vamps under it, and the whole thing runs a little over an hour with not a note of it written down.

ECM put the recording out at the end of 1975, and it went on to sell in numbers no solo piano record ever had, more than three and a half million copies, still the best-selling solo album in jazz. Fifty years on it has hardened into the standard reference for what one player can do alone at a keyboard, and in 2025 the American Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry. This is the 1975 Japanese pressing, licensed to Trio-Kenwood and issued in ECM's gatefold sleeve as a double LP, with lacquers cut at Victor (JVC), Japanese liner notes by Hisamitsu Noguchi, and an interview with producer Manfred Eicher printed on the back of the obi.

A note on this pressing

White ECM sleeves from this era are notorious for picking up toning and discolouration over time. It's the nature of the matte cardboard stock rather than evidence of rough handling. Completely clean examples are genuinely rare. The sleeve here shows the typical age-patina of the format and has been graded accordingly.

The Köln Concert is also worth approaching with a well-maintained setup. As one of the most intimate and dynamically quiet recordings in jazz - solo piano in a near-silent room - it will reveal surface noise that would be completely buried on a busier record. That's not a reflection of the vinyl's condition so much as the nature of the recording itself. If your stylus and cartridge are in good shape, this record will sing.
