Joe Webb grew up in Wales and moved to London in 2013. He plays stride piano with the tempo and attitude of a rock guitarist — his references run from Duke Ellington and Art Tatum to Oasis and Blur, and he doesn't treat these as contradictions. Hamstrings & Hurricanes is his first full-length album for Edition Records, made with his regular trio: Will Sach on bass and Sam Jesson on drums. Alex Killpartrick recorded; Alex Bonney mixed and mastered.

Twelve of the thirteen tracks are Webb originals. "Some Jesson" (A5) is named for the drummer; the Welsh titles — "Beth Yn Galw" (What's Calling), "Breuddwyd Cariad" (Love Dream), "Hiraeth" (a Welsh word for longing or homesickness, without an exact English equivalent) — place the album within a specific cultural inheritance even when the music itself moves between swing, modal jazz and something harder to categorise. "Squeeze Me," the closing cover, is Fats Waller's — a logical landing point given Webb's stride foundation. Webb described "Hiraeth" in press materials as his attempt at a more chilled version of Oasis's "Shakermaker," and the handwriting on the album's cover was directly inspired by the Definitely Maybe sleeve. The album was shortlisted for the 2025 Mercury Prize.
