Duke Ellington, Charlie Mingus, Max Roach - Money Jungle Vinyl LP - 1976 Japanese United Artists Jazz 1500 Series Limited Edition Stereo Reissue with Insert
The 17 September 1962 meeting of three jazz masters from different generations and approaches resulted in one of the piano trio format's most celebrated recordings. Duke Ellington, the elder statesman of jazz composition and orchestra leading, joins forces with bassist Charlie Mingus and drummer Max Roach, both innovators of modern jazz's post-bop and hard bop movements. The seven tracks, all Ellington compositions, showcase the creative tension and mutual respect between musicians whose approaches might seem incompatible: Ellington's elegant sophistication meets Mingus' intense, searching bass work and Roach's precise yet explosive drumming. Released in Japan on 5 December 1976 as part of United Artists' Jazz 1500 Series and manufactured by King Record Co. Ltd., this limited edition stereo pressing includes Japanese liner notes insert.
The title track "Money Jungle" sets the album's tone: Ellington's piano introduces the theme before Mingus and Roach engage in forceful, almost combative interaction, the elder Ellington maintaining poise while the rhythm section pushes and challenges. This dynamic continues across the programme, Ellington standards like "Caravan" and "Solitude" receiving treatments that honour their melodic beauty while incorporating modern harmonic and rhythmic approaches. "Le Fleurs Africaines (African Flower)" demonstrates how the three musicians could find common ground, Ellington's harmonic sophistication meeting Mingus' interest in African-influenced rhythms and Roach's polyrhythmic drumming.
The session reportedly included tensions (Mingus briefly walked out during recording), yet the final music transcends any personal friction, creating dialogue between jazz tradition and modern innovation. Mingus' bass work provides both harmonic foundation and aggressive melodic commentary, while Roach's drumming demonstrates restraint when supporting and explosive power when soloing. Manufactured by King Record Co. Ltd. with Japanese liner notes insert, this stereo pressing captures the intimate yet intense interaction between three giants. Note: The label incorrectly credits "Wig Wise" to Ellington, DeLange, and Mills; DeLange and Mills are actually lyricists for "Solitude".
