Originally released in 1955 on EmArcy, Study in Brown is a quintessential hard bop album from the legendary partnership of trumpeter Clifford Brown and drummer Max Roach. With Harold Land (tenor sax), Richie Powell (piano), and George Morrow (bass), the quintet delivers a program that is both fiery and lyrical.

The record features some of Brown’s most enduring work, including Daahoud and Joy Spring — two of his signature compositions that have become modern jazz standards. Throughout, Brown’s golden tone and flawless technique shine, while Roach’s drumming drives the band with inventive precision.

Brilliantly played and endlessly influential, Study in Brown captures the Clifford Brown–Max Roach Quintet at its peak and remains one of the cornerstone recordings of the hard bop era.
