Clifford Brown

Clifford Brown

Clifford Brown (1930–1956), trumpet virtuoso with glowing tone and immaculate technique, helped define hard bop. With Max Roach he led the Brown–Roach Quintet on classics Clifford Brown & Max Roach and Study in Brown. He wrote “Joy Spring” and “Daahoud.” Killed in a 1956 car crash at 25, he remains a model of lyrical swing.
