McCoy Tyner

McCoy Tyner

McCoy Tyner (1938–2020), pianist of John Coltrane’s Classic Quartet (A Love Supreme), forged a thunderous, modal language: powerful left hand, quartal harmonies, pentatonic flights. As a leader he made touchstones—The Real McCoy, Expansions, Extensions, Sahara, Enlightenment, Fly with the Wind—and wrote “Passion Dance” and “Search for Peace.” A cornerstone influence on modern jazz piano.
