Originally released in Japan in 1972 on JVC, Echoes of a Friend is a solo piano album by McCoy Tyner, recorded shortly after the death of his former bandleader and close collaborator John Coltrane. The record serves as both tribute and personal reflection, with Tyner revisiting Coltrane’s music while showcasing his own singular pianistic voice.

The program includes heartfelt renditions of Coltrane classics like Naima and My Favorite Things, alongside Tyner’s own compositions. His powerful left-hand attack, cascading chords, and lyrical improvisations make this album a moving blend of remembrance and innovation.
