Gary Burton

Gary Burton

Gary Burton (born 1943), vibraphonist, bandleader and educator, revolutionised the instrument with a pianistic four-mallet “Burton grip” and crystalline lyricism. An early fusion pioneer (1967’s Duster), he championed chamber-like duos with Chick Corea—Crystal Silence and beyond—and launched talents like Pat Metheny. A multi-GRAMMY winner and long-time Berklee mentor; later quartets featured guitarist Julian Lage.
