Ariella Granados grew up in Bryan, Texas, the daughter of an Indian father and a Mexican mother, singing in church from childhood. A decade-long hiatus from performing followed her early youth band years, and it took time before she found her way back to music and built the practice that became Sparklmami. She moved to Chicago and spent five years working toward a debut album that draws on 1970s Brazilian jazz, Mexican bolero, experimental soul and jazz funk in roughly equal measure, improvising across bilingual lyrics that move between English and Spanish as the emotional logic of each song demands. "in this body" (Verve, 2026), produced over those five years, opens with an invitation and sustains that tone across nine songs that excavate childhood memory, nostalgia and identity, including "fajas," written about her relationship with her estranged father, whom she met again in 2023. The Brazilian jazz influence is audible and specific: cascading vocal improvisation over polyrhythmic loops in the mode of the warm, verdant jazz being made in São Paulo and Rio in the early 1970s. The bolero influence sits differently, quieter, shaping the melodic sensibility and the Spanish-language phrasing rather than the rhythm. She performed at SXSW in 2026 and the album's word-of-mouth momentum has been building steadily since its June release. She is based in Chicago.
