Collection: Red Garland
Red Garland (1923-1984) provided the harmonic foundation for one of jazz's greatest groups: the Miles Davis Quintet from 1955 to 1958. A largely self-taught pianist from Dallas who learned the instrument during military service, Garland's distinctive block chord style and Ahmad Jamal-influenced sense of space defined the sound of landmark albums including 'Round About Midnight, Workin', Steamin', Cookin', and Relaxin'. His sophisticated yet bluesy approach perfectly complemented John Coltrane's searching explorations and Davis's lyrical trumpet.
Beyond his work with Davis, Garland led prolific trio sessions for Prestige and its subsidiary Moodsville, recording 25 albums between 1956 and 1962 with bassists Paul Chambers and Sam Jones and drummers Art Taylor and Philly Joe Jones. He retired in 1968 after his mother's illness brought him back to Dallas, but returned to performing in 1976. His elegant, swinging style influenced countless pianists and remains a cornerstone of modern jazz piano.
