Red Garland

Red Garland

Piano | 1923-1984

Red Garland's block chord style and sophisticated harmonic sense defined the sound of the Miles Davis Quintet from 1955 to 1958. A self-taught pianist from Dallas who learned during military service, he anchored the classic quintet with John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones on landmark albums including 'Round About Midnight, Workin', Steamin', Cookin', and Relaxin'. His Ahmad Jamal-influenced approach balanced elegant space with bluesy swing.

Beyond Davis, Garland led 25 albums for Prestige and Moodsville between 1956 and 1962, establishing himself as a masterful trio leader. He retired in 1968 when his mother's illness brought him back to Dallas, but returned to performing in 1976. His elegant, understated style influenced generations of jazz pianists and remains essential to understanding modern jazz piano's development.
