Collection: Johnny Hartman
Johnny Hartman was an American jazz singer known for his rich baritone voice and masterful interpretations of romantic ballads. Born in Louisiana in 1923 and raised in Chicago, his first professional break came in 1946 when he won a singing contest at the Apollo Theater, leading to engagements with Earl Hines and later Dizzy Gillespie's big band. Though his cool, understated style contrasted with bebop's rapid-fire energy, Hartman is best remembered for his 1963 collaboration with saxophonist John Coltrane, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, a landmark album and the only recording Coltrane ever made with a vocalist.
Despite critical acclaim, Hartman struggled for mainstream recognition throughout his career. He continued performing in cocktail lounges and recorded albums in Japan and Australia before returning to the jazz combo format with Once in Every Life in 1980, which earned him a Grammy nomination. More than a decade after he died in 1983, Clint Eastwood featured four songs from Once in Every Life in The Bridges of Madison County (1995), introducing Hartman's gorgeous voice to a new generation and sending his albums to the top of the jazz charts.
