Collection: Ali Shaheed Muhammad

Ali Shaheed Muhammad is best known as the DJ and producer of A Tribe Called Quest, formed in Brooklyn in 1985, whose jazz-sampling hip-hop made jazz a part of nineties rap for a generation of listeners. His own musicianship runs wider than that: he plays bass guitar, formed the R&B group Lucy Pearl after Tribe split, and was part of the Ummah production collective with Q-Tip and J Dilla. In 2013 he moved to Los Angeles to work with Adrian Younge, and the pair have scored Luke Cage for television, toured as The Midnight Hour (their 2018 album shares the name) and launched the Jazz Is Dead series, on which Muhammad is the main bass guitarist.
