Originally recorded between 1947–48 and compiled on LP in 1956, Genius of Modern Music, Volume 1 showcases Thelonious Monk’s groundbreaking early work for Blue Note. These sessions introduced many of his now-classic compositions, performed with a rotating cast including Art Blakey, Idrees Sulieman, Gene Ramey, and others.

Tracks like ’Round Midnight, Ruby, My Dear, and Well, You Needn’t reveal Monk’s distinctive harmonic language and rhythmic daring at its birth. Both adventurous and melodic, these recordings remain as fresh and vital today as when they were first cut.
