About this pressing
Originally released in 1957 and reissued here in 1976 by Riverside / Victor Musical Industries, Brilliant Corners remains one of Thelonious Monk’s most celebrated and challenging recordings. Featuring Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone), Ernie Henry (alto saxophone), Oscar Pettiford (bass), Max Roach (drums), and guest appearances from Clark Terry and Paul Chambers, the album captures Monk’s angular compositions and rhythmic daring at their peak.
The title track was so complex it required multiple takes and splicing to complete — a testament to Monk’s demanding vision. From the brooding ballad Pannonica (dedicated to his patron, the Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter) to the playful Bemsha Swing, the record showcases both his uncompromising originality and the deep swing at the heart of his music.
This Japanese Riverside pressing is prized for its quiet vinyl, warm mastering, and faithful reproduction of the original artwork, making it a beautiful audiophile edition of a modern-jazz classic.
Monk’s Brilliant Corners remains one of the defining albums of post-bop — cerebral, soulful, and endlessly inventive.
