The Visitors were a Philadelphia spiritual jazz quintet led by two brothers whose Coltrane connection was personal before it was musical. Carl and Earl Grubbs's cousin Naima was John Coltrane's first wife. Both Coltrane and Eric Dolphy spent time mentoring the brothers, and by the time Earl picked up the tenor saxophone and Carl took up the alto, the influence had been absorbed at close range rather than learned from records. The Visitors released four albums between 1972 and 1976, each one with different personnel. Stanley Clarke played bass on the debut, Neptune, recorded at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia with Sid Simmons on piano. Kenny Barron, Buster Williams and Tootie Heath came in for In My Youth. By Motherland, the final album, the group had settled on a quintet with Joe Bonner on piano, John Lee on bass and Victor Lewis on drums, and the music had tightened into something that balances modal structure against open improvisation without losing shape.

Five of the seven tracks are Grubbs originals. "Kimball" opens with a march-like theme, "Fables Of Africa" starts as a duet before expanding into individual statements, and the title track pulls back into a still, piano-led passage with Earl's soprano floating over it. The two standards are "Body & Soul" and Billy Eckstine's "I Want To Talk About You," both taken as direct line-trading between the brothers over the form. Michael Cuscuna produced the sessions at Blue Rock Studios in New York in October 1975, before he became the central figure in jazz archival work through Mosaic Records and his Blue Note reissue programme. J.C. Thomas wrote the original sleeve notes.
