About this pressing

Originally recorded in 1953–55 and compiled into album form in 1956 on Prestige, Django is one of the defining statements by The Modern Jazz Quartet. With Milt Jackson (vibraphone), John Lewis (piano), Percy Heath (bass), and Kenny Clarke (drums, later replaced by Connie Kay on some cuts), the group pioneered a sophisticated blend of bebop, blues, and chamber-music elegance.

The title track, Django, written by John Lewis in tribute to guitarist Django Reinhardt, became an instant classic and remains the group’s signature piece. Across the album, MJQ’s mix of poised ensemble work and bluesy swing demonstrates why they became one of the most enduring small groups in jazz.

Elegant, innovative, and deeply influential, Django stands as both a tribute to Reinhardt and a milestone in modern jazz ensemble playing.
