Stan Getz & João Gilberto Featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim - Getz/Gilberto Vinyl LP - 1977 Japanese Verve Immortal Jazz Series Gatefold Reissue

The album that brought bossa nova to international audiences and became one of jazz's biggest commercial successes, Getz/Gilberto unites American tenor saxophonist Stan Getz with Brazilian guitarist/vocalist João Gilberto and composer/pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim. Recorded in March 1963 and produced by Creed Taylor, the album features the original version of "The Girl From Ipanema" with vocals by Astrud Gilberto (João's wife at the time), plus seven other classics of the bossa nova repertoire. This 1977 Japanese reissue, part of Verve's Immortal Jazz series and distributed by Polydor K.K., presents this landmark recording in gatefold format.

The album's success stems from the perfect balance between Getz's cool-toned, lyrical tenor saxophone and Gilberto's understated guitar and intimate vocals, with Jobim's piano providing harmonic sophistication and compositional genius. "The Girl From Ipanema" became a worldwide hit and remains one of the most recorded songs in popular music history, while tracks like "Desafinado", "Corcovado", and "So Danco Samba" demonstrate bossa nova's subtle rhythmic sophistication and melodic beauty. Getz's saxophone solos float effortlessly over the gentle bossa nova rhythms, his tone perfectly suited to the music's relaxed yet emotionally rich aesthetic.

The album won four Grammy Awards including Album of the Year, making it one of the few jazz albums to achieve such mainstream recognition while maintaining artistic integrity.
