About this pressing

Recorded on 13 October 1957 at Rudy Van Gelder's Hackensack studio, this trio session captures Sonny Clark in the company of two giants of the rhythm section: bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. Released as part of Blue Note's prestigious Masterpiece Selection 150 series in 1978, this Japanese pressing by King Record Co. presents a sterling example of late 1950s piano trio jazz with the sonic excellence collectors demand.

The pairing of Clark with Chambers and Jones, both members of Miles Davis' legendary first quintet, creates magic throughout. Jones' crisp, responsive drumming and Chambers' warm, melodic bass lines provide the perfect foundation for Clark's elegant piano work. The repertoire balances originals and standards, moving between uptempo bop burners and more contemplative ballad performances.

Opening with "Be-Bop", the trio establishes their credentials immediately with swinging interplay and clear musical communication. Rodgers and Hart's "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" receives a tender reading that showcases Clark's lyrical side, while Dizzy Gillespie and John Lewis' "Two Bass Hit" allows the group to stretch out. The second side includes Tadd Dameron's "Tadd's Delight", a spirited take on "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", and a sparkling "I'll Remember April" that closes the album on an uplifting note.

Clark's playing throughout demonstrates why he was one of Blue Note's most valued pianists during this era. His touch is assured, his harmonic choices sophisticated, and his ability to swing effortless. This Japanese stereo reissue captures every nuance of Van Gelder's pristine recording, making it essential for serious Blue Note collectors.
