About this pressing
Ryo Fukui - Scenery | Vinyl LP, 2026 Nadja / Solid Records Japanese Reissue (SOLID1038, 180g Pure Vinyl, limited edition)
- A self-taught pianist who began playing at 22 and recorded this debut four years later, a piano trio session at Yamaha Hall in Sapporo on July 7, 1976 with his brother Yoshinori Fukui on drums and Satoshi Denpo on bass.
- Virtually unknown outside Sapporo for four decades, then picked up by YouTube's recommendation algorithm in the mid-2010s, accumulating millions of plays and turning a private-press Japanese jazz record into one of the most listened-to piano trio albums in the world.
- 2026 Japanese reissue on 180g Pure Vinyl, part of the Project Re:Vinyl series on Nadja / Solid Records, manufactured by Ultra-Vybe in Japan.
Ryo Fukui was born in Biratori, a small town in Hokkaido, in 1948. He started on accordion at 18 and switched to piano at 22, teaching himself by listening to records. Four years later he recorded Scenery. The speed of that progression, from first touching a piano to releasing an album that would eventually be heard by millions, is remarkable but the playing is too. Fukui's touch has a directness that comes from learning outside institutions, building technique to serve the music he heard in his head rather than the other way around. Similar to McCoy Tyner's attack and Bill Evans' harmonic sensitivity, Fukui also sounds completely like himself.
The trio is a family affair. Yoshinori Fukui, Ryo's brother, plays drums. Satoshi Denpo plays bass. The repertoire mixes four standards with two Fukui originals. "It Could Happen To You" opens with Fukui's right hand running fast bebop lines over Denpo's walking bass. "I Want To Talk About You," the Billy Eckstine ballad, is taken slowly enough to let the trio breathe. "Early Summer" is Fukui's own, a melody with a gentleness that contrasts with the bebop energy of the standards. Side B opens with "Willow Weep For Me" and moves into "Autumn Leaves," two standards played by everyone but rarely with this combination of vigour and intimacy. "Scenery," Fukui's title composition, closes the album.
The original pressing came out on Nadja, Fukui's own label, and barely circulated beyond Sapporo. In 1982 he moved to Tokyo and played the city's jazz clubs then returned to Sapporo in 1986. In 1992 he met the American bebop pianist Barry Harris, who became a mentor and in 1995 he and his wife Yasuko opened Slowboat, a jazz club in Sapporo that still operates under Yasuko's management. He received the Sapporo Culture Encouragement Award in 2012, the first jazz pianist to do so. He released his final album, A Letter from Slowboat, in 2015. He died on March 15, 2016 at the age of 67. Sometime around 2014, YouTube's algorithm began recommending Scenery to listeners searching for study music, lo-fi beats and ambient jazz, and the album accumulated millions of plays, turning a private-press Sapporo piano trio record into a global phenomenon that Fukui himself barely lived to see.
