Originally recorded in 1958 and later issued on Columbia, 1958 Miles captures Miles Davis at a turning point, leading the legendary sextet that would soon record Kind of Blue. With John Coltrane (tenor sax), Cannonball Adderley (alto sax), Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums), the album documents the band’s fluid interplay and forward-looking sound.

The set balances lyrical ballads with swinging numbers, from Davis’s muted trumpet on On Green Dolphin Street to Coltrane and Adderley’s fiery exchanges. It’s a vital snapshot of one of the greatest small groups in jazz history, just before they created their masterpiece.
