McCoy Tyner - The Real McCoy | Vinyl LP - 1977 Japanese Blue Note GXF-3008 (King Record 1800 Series Limited Edition)
- McCoy Tyner's 1967 Blue Note landmark, recorded in a single session on 21 April 1967 at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, with Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, Ron Carter on bass and Elvin Jones on drums; produced by Alfred Lion and engineered by Rudy Van Gelder
- Tyner's first major statement as a leader after leaving the John Coltrane Quartet in 1965, and widely considered among the most fully realised piano quartet recordings in the Blue Note catalogue
- A 1977 limited edition pressing from King Record's "Immortal Masterpiece Selection", one of 20 titles chosen to mark King's acquisition of the Blue Note Japan distribution contract; includes two LP-sized gatefold inserts
- Manufactured by King Record Co. Ltd., Japan — the same plant behind the most sought-after Japanese Blue Note pressings of the era
McCoy Tyner recorded The Real McCoy on 21 April 1967 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey — his second Blue Note album and the record on which his post-Coltrane voice came into its own. He had spent five years in John Coltrane's quartet, a period that shaped his approach to harmony, modal texture and rhythmic density, but by 1967 he was working through those ideas on his own terms. Alfred Lion produced. All five compositions are Tyner originals, and the personnel — Joe Henderson on tenor, Ron Carter on bass, Elvin Jones on drums — is as strong a quartet as Blue Note assembled that year. Henderson's presence as a co-equal voice, rather than a backing instrument, gives the music an argumentative quality: the interplay between piano and tenor on "Passion Dance" and the closer "Blues on the Corner" has rarely been bettered in a piano-led small group setting.
This 1977 Japanese pressing is from the "Blue Note Immortal Masterpiece Selection", a limited edition series of 20 titles issued by King Record Co. Ltd. to mark their acquisition of the Blue Note Japan distribution contract. It preceded the 1978 Blue Note Masterpiece Selection 150 series. The pressing comes with two LP-sized inserts: an alphabetical Blue Note artist listing printed on both sides, and a Japanese-language track information sheet.
