McCoy Tyner - Sama Layuca Vinyl LP - 1974 Japanese Milestone
- Tyner's spiritual jazz peak - post-Coltrane explorations with expanded ensemble and percussion
- All-star lineup - Bobby Hutcherson, Gary Bartz, Azar Lawrence create rich sonic tapestry
- Promo version of original 1974 Japanese pressing - Victor Musical Industries, same year as US release
Pianist McCoy Tyner's 1974 Milestone album presents five of his compositions performed by a nine-piece ensemble featuring vibraphonist/marimbist Bobby Hutcherson, alto saxophonist Gary Bartz, tenor/soprano saxophonist Azar Lawrence, flutist/oboist John Stubblefield, bassist Buster Williams, drummers Billy Hart and Mtume (also on conga drums), and percussionist Guillermi Franco. Recorded and remixed across multiple sessions in March and May 1974 at New York's Generation Sound Studios, the album demonstrates Tyner's evolution beyond his legendary work in John Coltrane's quartet (1960-1965), his compositional and pianistic voice fully independent yet still exploring the modal and spiritual dimensions established during the Coltrane years. Released in Japan in 1974 by Milestone and manufactured by Victor Musical Industries, this pressing captures Tyner leading large-scale spiritual jazz explorations.
Tyner's piano playing, characterized by powerful left-hand voicings and cascading right-hand runs, anchors the ensemble while the expanded instrumentation creates rich textures. Hutcherson's vibraphone and marimba add shimmering colours, the two percussionists (Franco and Mtume) provide polyrhythmic complexity suggesting African and Latin influences, while the four-horn frontline (Bartz, Lawrence, Stubblefield on various reeds) creates dense harmonic textures during ensemble passages and contrasting solo voices. The compositions range from the extended title track through the contemplative "Above The Rainbow" to the Latin-influenced "La Cubaña", each piece demonstrating Tyner's gift for memorable themes and sophisticated modal development.
The album's sound reflects 1970s spiritual jazz aesthetics: expanded percussion sections, modal harmonies allowing extended exploration, incorporation of global rhythmic influences, and ensemble sizes bridging small group intimacy and orchestral weight. Tyner's approach here connects to his Coltrane-era work while establishing his independent artistic vision, his compositions providing frameworks that balance written precision with improvisational freedom.
