John Coltrane - A Love Supreme Vinyl LP - 1967 Japanese Impulse! Gatefold Pressing
Universally recognised as one of the greatest achievements in jazz history, A Love Supreme represents John Coltrane's most complete artistic and spiritual statement. Recorded in a single session on 9 December 1964 with his legendary classic quartet and released in 1965, this four-part suite is both a deeply personal prayer and a work of transcendent musical beauty. This 1967 Japanese pressing, manufactured by King Record Co. and featuring the distinctive black and red Impulse! label, represents one of the earliest Japanese editions of this masterwork and is highly prized by collectors.
A Love Supreme is divided into four movements that chart a spiritual journey. "Acknowledgement" opens with Garrison's hypnotic bass figure before Coltrane enters with the now-iconic four-note "A Love Supreme" motif, which he develops through variations of increasing intensity. Elvin Jones' polyrhythmic drumming and McCoy Tyner's modal piano voicings create a foundation that is both grounded and ecstatic. The piece builds to Coltrane's chant of the title phrase, a moment of pure devotional expression.
"Resolution" maintains the suite's meditative quality while introducing a more lyrical theme. Coltrane's tenor saxophone explores the melody with both tenderness and passionate intensity, supported by Tyner's block chords and Jones' perfectly calibrated accompaniment. "Pursuance" explodes with energy, featuring one of Jones' most celebrated drum performances, a torrential display of polyrhythmic invention that drives Coltrane to some of his most fervent playing on the entire album.
The suite concludes with "Psalm", perhaps the most remarkable movement. Coltrane composed this as a musical setting of his poem (included in the original gatefold), with his saxophone literally reciting the words, his phrasing and inflections mirroring speech patterns. The quartet creates an atmosphere of profound reverence as the piece gradually fades, leaving the listener in contemplative silence.
This Japanese pressing captures Bob Thiele's production and Rudy Van Gelder's engineering with excellent fidelity. The gatefold format preserves Coltrane's original liner notes and poem, making this not just a listening experience but a complete artistic statement. For jazz collectors, this 1967 King Record pressing represents both historical significance and sonic excellence.
