Joe Pass - For Django | Vinyl LP - 1978 Japanese Pacific Jazz Limited Edition Reissue (GXF-3107, King Record Co. Ltd)
The format nods to the Quintet of the Hot Club of France without copying it. Where Reinhardt had Stéphane Grappelli's violin, Pass has Jim Hughart's bass and Colin Bailey's drums. Where Reinhardt had his brother Joseph on rhythm guitar, Pass has John Pisano. Pisano's playing is the understated engine of the album: he lays down chords that give Pass's single-note lines a harmonic bed without ever competing for space. Pass said Pisano was the guitarist he most wanted to work with, and left him a note after their last session together saying as much. Their partnership started around 1963 and continued intermittently until Pass's death in 1994. The material spans Reinhardt's own compositions ("Nuages," "Fleur d'Ennui," "Cavalerie," "Django's Castle"), standards Reinhardt played frequently ("Rosetta," "Night and Day," "Limehouse Blues," Paul Misraki's "Insensiblement") and two tributes: John Lewis's "Django" (from the Modern Jazz Quartet's repertoire) and Pass's own "For Django," a waltz elegant enough to sit alongside the Reinhardt originals. Pass told Guitar Player in 1974 that Reinhardt was an early influence, though his style owed at least as much to Charlie Christian. That distinction is audible here. This doesn't sound like gypsy jazz. It sounds like bebop guitar with a Reinhardt programme.
Pass was four years out of Synanon when he recorded this. He had entered the rehabilitation facility in 1960 with no guitar and 13 cents in his pocket. Richard Bock, who ran Pacific Jazz, heard him play during weekend jam sessions at the facility and signed him. For Django was Pass's fourth album for the label and the one that became an undisputed classic. The sessions were recorded across two dates in September 1964 at Pacific Jazz Studios in Hollywood.
