Jim Hall - Concierto Vinyl LP - 1975 Japanese CTI Gatefold
Guitarist Jim Hall's CTI debut unites him with two masters of lyrical jazz: trumpeter Chet Baker and alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, supported by pianist Roland Hanna, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Steve Gadd. Recorded at Van Gelder Studios in April 1975 and produced by Creed Taylor, the album's centrepiece is Joaquin Rodrigo's "Concierto De Aranjuez", arranged by Don Sebesky, which occupies the entire second side. Hall's crystalline guitar tone, Baker's fragile trumpet, and Desmond's warm alto create a frontline of remarkable sensitivity and melodic invention across the session. Manufactured by King Record Co. Ltd. in gatefold format with Japanese liner notes, this pressing captures Hall leading an all-star sextet through music that balances sophisticated interpretation with emotional directness.
The three tracks on side A demonstrate the group's chemistry in more intimate settings. "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" showcases the three-way interaction between Hall's guitar, Baker's muted trumpet, and Desmond's alto, while "Two's Blues" and "The Answer Is Yes" allow each soloist space to develop ideas supported by the rhythm section's impeccable taste. Ron Carter's bass and Steve Gadd's drums provide both swing and contemporary groove, while Roland Hanna's piano adds harmonic sophistication. The combination of Hall, Baker, and Desmond—all favouring understatement and melodic clarity over technical display—creates music of rare gentleness and beauty.
Sebesky's arrangement of "Concierto De Aranjuez" transforms Rodrigo's orchestral work into a jazz context without diminishing its emotional power or melodic beauty. Hall's classical guitar technique serves him well here, his interpretation honouring the composition's Spanish character while allowing for jazz improvisation.
