Freddie Hubbard - Hub-Tones | Vinyl LP - 1985 Japanese Blue Note Promo Stereo (BNJ71086, Blue Note 4000 Series Original Collection 100, Toshiba EMI Ltd.)

Freddie Hubbard recorded Hub-Tones on October 10, 1962. Alfred Lion produced; Rudy Van Gelder engineered; Reid Miles designed the cover with a photograph by Francis Wolff. The quintet was Hubbard on trumpet, James Spaulding on alto saxophone and flute, Herbie Hancock on piano, Reggie Workman on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums. It was an early session for both Spaulding and Hancock, and Hubbard had only recently joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. The album was recorded in October 1962 and released in November 1963.

For the first time in his Blue Note career, Hubbard contributed the majority of the original material. Four of the five tracks are his. "You're My Everything," the session's opening track, is the 1931 Mort Dixon, Harry Warren and Joe Young standard, taken at a broad, unhurried tempo that sets up the more angular originals to follow. "Hub-Tones" runs nearly eighteen minutes, opening with Spaulding on flute before the full group takes the modal theme. "Lament for Booker" is a slow, searching elegy for trumpeter Booker Little, who had died on October 5, 1961 at age twenty-three. "For Spee's Sake" is named for Spaulding. Joe Goldberg wrote the original liner notes. The April 1964 issue of Jazz Journal praised Spaulding's vigorous, modern alto and flute work, Hancock's rhythmic support and Clifford Jarvis's original cymbal approach on the title track.

This 1985 Toshiba EMI pressing is part of the Blue Note 4000 Series Original Collection 100 series, which reproduced the original Blue Note 4000 series catalogue from the original masters. It is a promotional copy, identifiable by the promo sticker on the high-gloss reverse sleeve. Includes a four-page insert with Japanese liner notes and a Freddie Hubbard Blue Note discography.
