Freddie Hubbard - Hub Cap | Vinyl LP - 1992 Japanese Blue Note Stereo (BN 4073, Blue Note 4000 Series Ultra Collection No. 143, Toshiba EMI Ltd.)

Freddie Hubbard recorded Hub Cap on April 9, 1961, three months after Goin' Up and eight months into his run of Blue Note leader dates that began with Open Sesame in 1960. Alfred Lion produced; Rudy Van Gelder engineered. The sextet format — trumpet, trombone, tenor, piano, bass, drums — gave Hubbard a front line of three voices to work with. Julian Priester on trombone anchored the low end of the horn section; Jimmy Heath's tenor, dry and direct, filled the middle. Cedar Walton on piano, Larry Ridley on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums completed the rhythm section.

Five of the six tracks are Hubbard originals published by Groove Music. The title track uses Hubbard's nickname; "Luana" is for his niece; "Earmon Jr." is named for his brother, a pianist, and was arranged by Ed Summerlin. "Cry Me Not" is the one exception, written by Randy Weston for the date and arranged by Melba Liston, it gave Hubbard the most harmonically open material on the record.

This 1992 Japanese pressing is part of the Blue Note 4000 Series Ultra Collection, a limited reissue series from Toshiba EMI. Stereo. Comes with OBI strip and insert.
