Freddie Hubbard - Goin' Up | Vinyl LP - 1990 Japanese Blue Note Stereo (BN 4056, Blue Note LP Last Reissue No. 32, Toshiba EMI Ltd.)
Freddie Hubbard's second Blue Note date as leader was recorded November 6, 1960 at Van Gelder Studio, a week before Hank Mobley went back in to record Roll Call with an overlapping rhythm section. Alfred Lion produced; Rudy Van Gelder engineered. Mobley on tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, Philly Joe Jones on drums.
Of the six tracks, one is a Hubbard original: "Blues For Brenda," a minor blues written for his wife. Hank Mobley contributes two originals, "The Changing Scene" and "A Peck A Sec." Kenny Dorham provides two: "Asiatic Raes," which had appeared on Sonny Rollins' Newk's Time (Blue Note, 1957), and "Karioka," a Dorham piece previously unrecorded. "I Wished I Knew" is the 1940 Harry Warren and Mack Gordon standard, taken here at a medium ballad tempo that showcases Philly Joe Jones on brushes and Paul Chambers's bass lines to considerable effect. Ira Gitler wrote the liner notes; Reid Miles designed the cover; Francis Wolff photographed.
This 1990 Toshiba EMI pressing is part of the Blue Note LP Last Reissue series (No. 32) — a limited Japanese reissue series marketed as the final official LP edition. It includes an OBI strip and a four-page series insert.
