Ella Fitzgerald - Ella Fitzgerald At The Opera House Vinyl LP - 1985 Japanese Verve Best 50 Series Mono Reissue

This live concert recording captures Ella Fitzgerald performing with two distinct configurations: the Oscar Peterson Trio (with Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Jo Jones on drums) on side A, and an all-star big band featuring tenor saxophonists Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz, Lester Young, Illinois Jacquet, and Flip Phillips, plus Roy Eldridge on trumpet, J.J. Johnson on trombone, and Sonny Stitt on alto saxophone on side B. Released in Japan in 1985 as part of Verve's Best 50 series and manufactured by Polydor K.K., this mono pressing showcases Fitzgerald's vocal mastery across both intimate trio settings and full big band arrangements.

Side A features seven standards with the Peterson Trio providing sophisticated yet unobtrusive support, Fitzgerald's voice navigating Cole Porter's "It's All Right With Me", the torch ballad "Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered", and six other classics with her characteristic blend of technical perfection and emotional warmth. The trio format allows maximum space for Fitzgerald's phrasing and Peterson's elegant piano work, Ellis' guitar and Brown's bass adding subtle colours. Side B's two extended tracks with the all-star ensemble feature Fitzgerald trading phrases with some of jazz's greatest horn players, "Stompin' At The Savoy" and "Oh, Lady Be Good" showcasing both her scat singing abilities and her rapport with instrumental giants.
