Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young - Classic Tenors | Vinyl LP - 1972 Japanese Flying Dutchman Mono Gatefold (SR(M)-3137, Contact Jazz Series Vol. 1, King Record Co. Ltd.)
Bob Thiele supervised three separate sessions at WOR Studios in New York across three weeks in December 1943, all originally released on his Signature Records label. They are collected here in their entirety: twelve tracks, two tenor saxophonists, three different ensembles.
On December 23, Coleman Hawkins recorded four titles in a quartet with pianist Eddie Heywood, bassist Oscar Pettiford and drummer Shelly Manne — "The Man I Love," "Sweet Lorraine," "Get Happy" and "Crazy Rhythm." All four are standards. Pettiford and Heywood open "The Man I Love" in duet before Hawkins enters; it is one of the finest small-group swing recordings of the war years. Fifteen days earlier, on December 8, Hawkins had led a larger group: Bill Coleman on trumpet, Andy Fitzgerald on clarinet, Ellis Larkins on piano, Al Casey on guitar, Oscar Pettiford on bass and Shelly Manne on drums. That session produced "How Deep Is the Ocean," "Voodte," "Hawkins' Barrel House" and "Stumpy" — the latter three Hawkins originals. On December 21, Lester Young took four tracks with a different group entirely: Bill Coleman on trumpet, Dickie Wells on trombone, Ellis Larkins on piano, Freddie Greene on guitar, Al Hall on bass and Jo Jones on drums. "Hello Babe" and "I'm Fer It Too" are Wells compositions; "Linger Awhile" and "I Got Rhythm" are standards. The high-note trombone work on "I'm Fer It Too" was specifically cited by Scott Yanow.
Hawkins died on May 19, 1969; Young on March 15, 1959. This 1972 Japanese Flying Dutchman mono pressing is the Contact Jazz Series Vol. 1, manufactured by King Record Co. Ltd.
