Reissued in 1978 by Blue Note Japan (catalogue no. GXK 8075) as part of the Blue Note Masterpiece Selection 150 series, The Scene Changes: The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 5 captures pianist Bud Powell in his final Blue Note session, recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in December 1958.

Accompanied by Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums, Powell delivers a set of all-original compositions that combine rhythmic drive with astonishing clarity of touch. Pieces like Cleopatra’s Dream and Duid Deed showcase his melodic inventiveness, while Crossin’ the Channel and Gettin’ There reveal a renewed spark of energy and optimism.

The trio interplay is tight and conversational — Chambers’s grounding pulse and Taylor’s crisp cymbal work giving Powell the freedom to dart, dance, and soar. The result is one of the most lyrical and cohesive recordings of Powell’s later career, full of wit and vitality.
