About this pressing
Released in 1991 on Commodore, this limited-edition 3×LP mono box set compiles every track Billie Holiday recorded for Commodore between 1939 and 1944. These sessions capture Holiday at her emotional and artistic peak, performing with small-group swing ensembles in some of the most intimate and powerful recordings of her career.
Included are multiple takes of each song — an audiophile’s dream and a historian’s treasure — tracing Holiday’s subtle vocal phrasing and interpretive nuance from take to master. Among them are the first and master takes of “Strange Fruit,” “Fine and Mellow,” “Yesterdays,” “I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues,” “He’s Funny That Way,” and “On the Sunny Side of the Street.”
Pressed to Japan’s famously high standards, this 3-LP edition offers superb sound quality and detailed session information across all sides. It’s one of the finest and most comprehensive presentations of the Commodore era ever issued on vinyl.
A definitive, audiophile-grade Japanese issue of Billie Holiday’s complete Commodore sessions — historically essential and beautifully presented.
