About this pressing

Recorded in January 1957 and released the same year on Contemporary Records, Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section is widely considered one of the alto saxophonist’s masterpieces. The “rhythm section” in question is none other than Miles Davis’s legendary crew at the time: Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums).

Despite battling personal struggles during this period, Pepper plays with breathtaking clarity, invention, and lyricism, pushed to new heights by the sharp, swinging interplay of Garland, Chambers, and Jones. From ballads to bebop burners, every track glows with urgency and brilliance.

A cornerstone of West Coast jazz and a must-own for any serious collection, Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section is a rare meeting of two worlds that produced one of the finest jazz albums of the 1950s.
