About this pressing

Recorded live in Paris in 1959 and released on RCA France, Au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées captures Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in a transitional but electrifying lineup. Featuring Lee Morgan (trumpet), Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone), Walter Davis Jr. (piano), Jymie Merritt (bass), and Blakey on drums, this edition documents some of the earliest recordings of Shorter with the band.

The set is compact but powerful, highlighting the Messengers’ blend of fiery hard bop, soulful melodies, and Blakey’s volcanic drive. Morgan’s brilliance is on full display, Shorter hints at the compositional voice he would soon be known for, and Blakey pushes the group with relentless swing.
